It's a bit more complicated than that...
They served non-alcoholic beer at the end of the Cambridge Half-Marathon, so can't be too bad an idea!
Or they had some sponsorship from somewhere...

1part pure fruit juice mixed with 3 parts water with a pinch of salt.

Everyone's quoting the pinch of salt. Does it actually do anything? On a long ride we tend to go out with two bottles of water and two of very dilute cordial (lemon and ginger is a good one) between the two of us. I usually drink about two-thirds of what we've got, and Mrs W has about half the rest. I suspect if I put salt in the cordial she wouldn't touch it!

I suppose we do tend to have salty snacks - toasted corn or Japanese rice crackers - which might serve the same purpose.

Here for rides.
50% fruit juice (my pref is pineapple or merlot grape) 50% water and a good pinch of salt.

Jet airways in India serve something similar on internal flights made of lemon juice water sugar and salt.

dunno about the salty snacks, part of it is replacing the salts lost through sweat so all well and good for that, but a saline drink is supposed to aid the absorbtion of the liquid and its retention for use in the body, as opposed to pure water, which passes into urine more readily. The fruit juice is largely for its energy / sugar content in a nicer taste than just drinking sweetened slightly saline water. The ratio of water to juice can be changed for a change between more hydration and less sugar (3:1 water to juice sliding to 1:3 for a bit more energy and a bit less hydration). I'm also told that the drink should be near as body temperature so that the body is not expending more energy and time bringing it to the right temperature to be absorbed
