Recommeded routes - Arnhem, Netherlands

Hi,

Long shot this one, but wondered if anyone on here is familiar with the Arnhem area and might want to suggest some road routes and/or light off-road trails (CX with 28mm tyres rather than full-sus rockhopping) in the Arnhem area. I'll be spending a week there shortly and am planning on some early starts while the family get themselves roused and doused, so 2-3hr circular routes would be ideal.

The Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe is only about 5km from Arnhem. It's an area of heathland and woods that's got loads of bike trails. I went through it on the way to the Kroller-Muller Museum, a great place to visit if you like paintings and sculptures.

Yes, that's very much on our itinerary, along with th Kroller-Muller. Between that and the neighbouring Veluwezoom I think I might be spoilt for choice when it comes to off-road trails tbh, but just thought I'd check with CCers in case anyone had any particular highlights as we are leaving next Monday and I have a manic week this week so planning time will be virtually non-existant.
Would the trails around PDH Veluwe suit 28mm slicks, or would you advise I strap on something sturdier? Did you do any cycling along/around the Rhine?

My Dutch friend suggested we pick up White Bikes at the railway station (I forget which one). They didn't have skinny tyres but they didn't have big fat ones either. If you Google White Bikes, the tyre info will probably be out there somewhere.

I would suggest buying a cycle map from one of the two ANWB shops in Arnhem,there are countless options regarding short cycle trip routes in the area.
Navigation can be a little confusing due to the numerous rivers and waterways and these change name along their length or when crossing national boundaries, eg Nederijn, Merwede, Meuse, and note the Rhine cycle route runs alongside the Waal in the Netherlands.

You should be OK with 28 slicks (as long as it isn't too wet). The national park is great to cycle round - Mr R and I spent a half day there earlier this year (although we used the White Bikes).

Thanks. On closer inspection it looks like I'll be around 1hr ride from the Hoge Veluwe and 15mins ride from the Veluwezoom national park. So I'll probably stick to borrowing white bikes with the family when we go on a day trip to Hoge Veluwe and head for the Veluwezoom instead for a couple of solo early morning blasts. Judging by Google Earth it looks like a great mix of narrow tarmac roads through the forest and some gravel tracks, so I'll likely do a reccy ride with the slicks on but also take the knobblies with us as some of those trails look hard to resist!

The Rhine Path in that area isn't the most interesting part but still a good ride.

Fair enough, I'll give that a swerve then. Any road rides you especially enjoyed outside the national parks? I was looking at the Rhederlaag river park but it looks like the cycle path doesn't go all the way around and I'm not sure what the deal is with the ferry. Did you head south over the bridge at all?
