Accy, old chap....tell us what you want your phone to be able to do and then we can give sensible advice

"Phones" these days vary from things you can only call people with to things that will run your life it you let it

If you don't want a smart phone, what about a new Nokia 3310?

Or if you can be tempted to try a smartphone with all those fancy apps like Garmin, Strava and Ride With GPS, you won't go far wrong with a Motorola G4.
You beat me to it! Nokia specs here:

My 8 year old phone has packed in. It won't charge up now. I'll have to buy another. Sad as i usually get someone's cast off for free. Please recommend me an easy to use, cheap to run and cheap to buy phone please.
Hang on ... is it just a duff battery? Why not just get a new battery from eBay for a few pounds?

I've sat on a bus and seen around 80% of the passengers glued to their phones. I don't want to end up like that. I want people to be able to contact me and me contact them. I don't know if i'd like the internet stuff, as it looks like it's a bit obsessive, from my bus experiences.

The phone is falling to pieces. It has a sim card that has quite a few pics' of my old dog and stuff. If i could find a phone that'd accept that card i think i'd buy it.

Very few SIM cards will store pictures. They'll be on the phone itself. See the post by @Deafie
One other option, when you get the replacement, send via bluetooth to the new handset.

Samsung GT-B 2710. The ideal dog and bone for a cyclist.

Near indestructable, 5 weeks between charges, modestly priced, as used by Bernard 'Drago' Farquhar, so guaranteed to be the envy of your chums.
In a manufacturers shop last week, where the manager was saying that despite the size of the screen, they are built really well these days.

Questioned would it survive a drop and got the obvious answer. Both handsets dropped, only one survived intact, and remained working.

Same here buddy. I don't want to become a smart phone zombie. Its worrying, and rather sad really.

The Samsung takes the standard sized SIM, not the micro or nano. That said, I use it with a nano sim and an adaptor and its happy as a frog in a puddle. It'll display your pics too.

Mine has endured some nasty drops, and is still virtually unmarked after 3 years.

Look on E-bay "featured deals", there is a SIM-free (i.e. unlocked) Motorola Moto G for £105, it is refurbished but comes with a 12 month Argos warranty (it's being sold by Argos on E-Bay).

Another option is the Samsung J5 - more in the £130 bracket but my mate had one and said most things on it were nearly as good as the galaxy S7.
