This one makes me laugh.... 30 metre length!!! Tell you what, get 30 metres and I'll buy half of it off you for 12 quid.

Well no - very useful and to the point advice - definitely an argument against the £25 kits I've seen in bike shops and answers my question, mystified as I was by the incredible percentage difference in costs.

But pray tell where do you buy those inners and outers of yours?
Go to that second link and go to the seller's shop. MONKEYMANSION. You'll find all you need in single job or workshop quantities.

Great cubist - many thanks - your response encourages me to stick to my guns - ask what seems to some a stupid question, and don't be embarrassed by it, and you might learn something.

The marketing wonks of course just love embarrasment.

thanks again

The only stupid question is one that no-one asks.

Well the Edinburgh Bike Co-op red Fibrax wonder has taken a while coming so I popped out to Decathlon and got their basic straightforward stainless cable and 2M length of outer - fitted and all works like a dream. Can't imagine any of the fancier stuff being any better really - now to just make sure I regularly maintain it, GT85 under the outers.

Not GT85, I have feeling that might attack the nylon liner. Best is to remove the inner, run it through some wire wool to clean it up then wipe with a wax chain lube like Finish Line and allow to dry before refitting.

Agh Globalti - thanks - will check that out - any other views on this?

I must say I wasn't thinking of removing the inner for cleaning/lubing - more like reducing the tension and slipping the outers along to lube exposed bits before refitting.

More views on the lube or not to lube and with what welcome.

And just when I thought I'd settled all this

I'm pretty sure that was the advice given to you at the start of this thread....

I grease the inner cable with lithium grease as I'm fitting it, and throw both inner and outer away when it all gets graunchy.

now, now, you're creeping towards 'slap down' mode again...think happy thoughts, it's Friday and all that
Thanks for that MacB - I thought it good forum behavior to update the thread after all the advice I'd been given. Didn't expect to be told off.

I rather thought the whole point of a forum was to benefit from a range of expertise from well meaning folk - all views welcome as long as they are honestly held with no game playing.

Of course I could save troubling you nice cyclechatters with questions they could answer in their good time (sometimes I answer other folks' questions) if black n yellow could just PM me his phone number - I could then just call him 24/7 with the "final word" on any cycling topic and the rest of us could just go pedal.

back to cables/grease/oil - thanks for your view cubit.
