I’ve used the Redex one to good effect.

Sounds normal..if it's ok when hot?

Try redex treatment usually cleans them up.
However a diagnosis is a better bet, common rail diesels are very complex ,it may be a glow plug, or sensor..
Worth a bit of professional advice if it's a sudden change?

Been doing it for a couple of years, never failed an MOT. It happens at all times if I stamp on the revs. Hot or not.

I don't use any additives really, change fuel filter and stick a hose pipe up exhaust whilst engine is running.Make sure there's nobody stood behind it though !

What does the hose pipe do.

It’s for tying the mechanic up while you do a runner before you have to pay the bill.

I've always cleaned older diesel engines like this, cleans the soot and other crap out.Diesels soot up especially if doing short,stop/start driving I always take them on motorway for a blast before MOT.Drop it down a gear when and watch the black blow out.
Disclaimer I'm not responsible for any blown engines!

I'm responsible for any blown engines caused by this advice!

That's reassuring, cheers pal.

These diesel engine cleaning additives... Where does the gunk go? Into the atmosphere?

No it goes into the exhaust filtration system that any decent garage using terraclean will have. Where does the black smoke go when blasted out on a fast road?
