Here for rides.
£300 tops budget, steaks and burgers style of barbecuing as it is unlikely we will ever do a suckling pig or cook the Christmas turkey on it.

Something I can just go out and use without finding that bits have dropped off, rusted through, worn out, or otherwise failed, the second summer after I've bought it.

You appear to be looking for an outdoor grilling device, not a barbecue.

The easiest to use barbecue (or 'outside grilling device') and ones that are likely to last are the Kettle style barbecues: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Landmann-43..._1_1?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1344350457&sr=1-1

Or if you have some old bricks lying around, you could just build up a backboard and attach a wire frame to it. We used to have one of those and it was great as you only had a single piece to clean and you didn't need to worry about it rusting.

Simplest is better in my opinion when it comes to barbecues... and they are cheaper!

Failing that, go for one of these: http://cdn.speednik.com/files/2012/06/BBQ_Engine1c.jpg

My bruv rates the B and Q ones. He was trying to get my to buy a four burner one last time I was round at his place - I think that was about the budget. But the damn thing was huge. He votes Labour, brews his own beer and composts his own poo in a sceptic think tank, but even he reckoned a gas one was OK.
^_^

Alternatively, he could grill his food indoors and then take it outside...

Stretch your budget for an Outdoor chef

I've had mine at least 10 years and it works as well as day1. More of a multi cooker than a basic bbq, doing everything from low'n'slow American style to Griddling plus pizza and paella
