Do something along the lines of 'starters are an outdated bourgeois concept', instead I will read some poetry.

How about chicken's liver pâté?

Cook the chicken's liver with a bit of salt and pepper. Then chop it up with some raw finely chopped onions and let it cool. Bit of clarified butter on the top of the bowl to seal it.

You can eat with Melba toast or whatever. Delicious and cheap.

Instead of actually saying this, do you think Rich could give the meaning through the mode of expressive dance?

I like it. What do you think about using filo?
filo is fiddly, that ready made puff stuff makes an impressive starter.
I often make open tarts packed with 1/2-ed cherry tomatoes is always good - you can add herbs / cheese to suit the fussy ones. Might be hard to carry though - the soup and good bread option is easiest -- anyway am I too late?

I think it's time for Rich to grow a beard, and introduce his small plates concept, served on upcycled bin lids and washed in the tears of locally foraged roadkill.

Someone throw this man a rope, it needs to be about 40 years long...

Phew you found the end of the rope....good to have you back....
I may be missing something here ... or did the UK only get smoked salmon, avocado and balsamic in the 21st century? Both dishes seem retro to me, though the 2nd is probably only 30 years old and would still be a tasty treat.

(if you must have avocado, it should be smashed and served with a poached egg, and even that's pretty oughties)

Edit: to be helpful - I'd get a good loaf of sour dough, and visit an italian or Spanish deli and put together antipasta/cold tapas
