Have a set of these pedals coming on my new bike - Shimano SH PD-A 520 - but no shoes to wear. Never gone clipless before so any advice is appreciated. Ta.

Here for rides.
Summer I like Spesh BG sport mtb shoes. Guy at the next desk to me swears by Spesh BG sport touring shoes.

Winter I like the shimano goretex bootee-style shoes.

What might be a good idea is to buy a pair of shoes that take both SPD & SPD-SL just in case you might want to change for some reason. I bought a pair of Shimano R088 shoes for that reason, decent shoes too .

Do you need to be able to walk in them? The Shimano R088 look nice and are very light, however non recessed cleats. Mine are going back as I often potter around the shops etc during a ride

I have a couple of pairs from Specialized, which are comfy

I would go to a shop with a decent selection, try some on and buy there - cycling shoe sizing is quite mixed

A couple of things to consider - if its only your one pair and you commute all year around, decide if you want mesh panels or not. Nice in the summer (if we ever get one) but not so good when it rains. Get some overshoes, yiou will need them.

And finally I find stiffer shoes better than ones not so stiff.

Evans sometimes have good deals and while Spesh are nice (I have their boots), Bontager are good as well. Both them are relatively wide fitting.

This will be for my weekend bike (Canyon Roadlite 7.0) - not my city commuter. That said, recessed cleats would still be nice. Having a good look at the above... any other suggestions?

Along with most cycling gear and apparel. The brands all fit different. So the best thing you should do is try on first. It's alright someone saying this brand is great or that brand is great, you spend a lot of dosh and find the fit is not to your liking.
