Well, it's not so much the bread makers that are the problem but the insistence on some of the ingredients like fast-action yeast.
Most bread makers are similar so, assuming you get a decent make, I wouldn't spend a fortune on fancy features.
This article from Real Bread Campaign is ok though there's an acre of information about ethically sourcing one before you get to the recipe stuff:
