So yesterday cycling home my hub suffers total failure which made cycling home very tricky (actually impossible, thanks millions to my beautiful GF for coming and rescuing me ).

Today I "work from home" and pop to the local BS (it's a 5 min walk from here) only to find it's shut!!! don't know if it got looted as a result of the recent Oasis concerts (it overlooks the park) or what but it's not there any more

Agghh the only other Local BS I know is Rick Green's in Handforth and to say I don't trust them at all is probably under cooking it quite considerably.

So does anyone know of a good Local BS in Manchester that they would recommend? preferably near Prestwich or Handforth but that's not that important.

BTW I managed to get my bike up and running thanks to a bargain at Evan's cycles but I wouldn't want to start relying on them all the time as I like to support local businesses.

rick greens has a very good rep afaik, many of my fellow club riders shop there.

if it's not too far out of the way, macclesfield has both a road specialist shop (chester road cycles) and also a general shop that does good repairs, usually same day (bikes of macclesfield). i'd recommend them.

I am sure they do but my experience has been very different, with indifferent staff and a service which was so bad that it actually damaged some parts.

Actually I think I have used bikes of Macclesfield when I used to work at AZ, they were very good.

Maybe I caught them on a bad day!

Ahh, I knew I had seen something like that before, just found it on the search engine. 15 pages!!, unfortunately the search engine isn't advanced enough to pinpoint the use of Manchester within those 15 pages but I will plough through it anyway.

Thanks for reminding me about it

Rick Green is a local legend, never heard a bad word to say about him, I used to haunt that shop as a kid, only ever making small purchases, asking daft questions but was always made to feel welcome and given plenty of advice, now I have not been in for years but would be surprised if things had slipped to that extent.

I use Royles in Wilmslow (Knutsford Road, just off the Kings Arms roundabout)as it is about 200 yards from where I live, they arent the cheapest (try haggling) but I cannot fault the service, very helpful and knowledgeable, I had a problem with some gloves that split, they had been well used but they exchanged them without batting an eyelid.

You could always try Dave Hinde's in Northwich......

Dont' mention DH....

Rick Greens also is good.

I can recommend Wills Wheels on the A6 in Heaton Chapel (just north of Stockport)- proper bike shop, totally sound - I've known him 20 years (he's only in his late 30's).

Sorted out a set of rebuilt wheels and a new fixed bike for me.

+1 for Wills Wheels from me, too.

Replaced rear derailleur cable on Friday rainy and windy evening so I could get home. I can't yet go uphill on 53 x 11

Cooksons Cycles in Whitefield. best bike shop I have ever been in. They have sorted me out so many times and their customer service is amazing. Only up the road from you as well!

Another +1 for Bardsleys (Will's Wheels) espically the 7:30 summer closing time on M,W,F very useful.

Harry Halls is also very good, wide range of stuff and knowledgeable staff. City Centre.

Bicycle boutique were out doing free services for the Uni's Bike to WOrk day, so they've got a helpful attitude at the very least. I've never used them so can't say anything else about them.

Evans you've already tried and there's also the Edinborough Bike co-op which certainly stocks a lot of bikes and seems to have good staff when I've been in.

Bike Boutique are very good - certainly Value for Money, but don't expect them to be able to obtain parts if yo have a 'higher end' bike...... they mainly deal with the more 'day to day' stuff.....ideal for those who need a quick fix though.

PS Wills Wheels is often open from very early in the morning - he uses this time to catch up with repairs - so if the lights are on, and you can see him in the workshop, I'm sure he'd welcome you..... I turned down picking my bike up at 6am on a Saturday.....and he'd been in the shop until 7.30pm the night before....
