I used to work for Miele, I hated it but stayed long enough to buy some products at a much reduced price. Fortunately I still have friends who work there when I need anything else.

Numatic Henry or Hetty or Harry - don't have one, but seen so many office cleaners using them they must be good
I have only had one of these since around 1986 and its had a service (costing £14) and its epic. I have no idea how long they live for though. I have 4 dogs and it sorts out the pet hair really well. When I bought it I had a German Shepherd and we all know that they are world class shedders.

If 'Henry' died I would have another in a heartbeat. I feel that its not about to die any time soon though.
Had a dyson once. I had it for 2 days and took it back to the shop and got a refund as it was more pants than an underwear drawer. Total rubbish and I would never have another one, even if my life depended on it. The marketing is fantastic, the reality is somewhat different. It blocked, blocked again and then blocked some more. Definitely not designed for a GSD owner.

Isn't a Henry just a cylinder cleaner with a nose? How could a cylinder cleaner solve the problem created by stubborn dog hairs on carpets?

From experience, it doesnt. Hence the need for a decent upgrade.

Get a used Kirby off ebay.

I have been toying with the idea of a Kirby; my mum still has the same one she had when we were kids; about 25 years old now and it still works.

If you go down the kirby route make sure you get a g4 or newer model with the self propulsion widget thingy. You can pick up nearly new (i.e. 10 years old but hardly used) from ebay for maybe £150.

I bought a Vax Mach Air Reach almost two years ago as nothing else would pick up the cat hair coating my carpets and furniture. Works an absolute treat. Mind you, just checked and it seems to be £100 more expensive than when I got mine - must have been on a special offer at the time...
