I have been getting an 'error 756' message when trying to log on to the internet lately, on the PC.
Googling it suggests that it's a registry problem. Is there a cleaner anyone can recommend if this is the case?

ccleaner, free download, check google

+1 CCleaner. As someone who has been very nervous of reg cleaners, this is the one I now use. Obviously, you've got to back the reg up before you clean it, but it hasn't caused me any problems (yet).

I have had it for about 5 years and never backed up - never had a problem. I tick everything but 'Wipe Free Disk Space' (which I do every month or so).

What makes you think it is a registry issue RichP?

My googling says that it is a Dialup Networking issue, ie. modem problem....you seriously can't still be on dial up now can you, so I would assume at that point that you have a nasty which is trying to dial out instead.

Which program is reporting the error 756? IE? If so, go into options and remove any Dial up settings if you have any...

Failing that a generous dose of Spybot S & D may well be in order.

Edit: Another thread elsewhere, same symptoms, same advice... http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive....scripting.virus.discussion/2004-09/0162.html

Has anyone used Registry Mechanic? I installed it years ago but was then told it was a waste of time, so I deleted it.

I did use Registry Mechanic until other options became available for cheaperfree. It was fairly good at cleaning out unused stuff left behind by uninstallers etc., but didn't work so well at fixing proper errors.

Thanks for the CCleaner recommendations. I've got an old Windows 98 PC that I use once in a while with some old legacy software, but its been producing annoying 'Zone Alarm' error messages for ages. I couldn't do anything with it and I couldn't even un-install the 'Zone Alarm' software. Anyway I went in there and manually deleted all the 'Zone Alarm' system folders, then ran CCleaner to tidy up the Registry. It works a treat now and no more annoying error messages.
