It always surprises me how many commuters (got to be commuters because who else is out riding in the dark on a wet weekday morning at 7am?) don't let on or even make eye contact. I always try to give a nod or a little raise of the hand if it is not appropriate to say a hello or morning.

I pass the same older woman (in the opposite direction) most mornings and again in the evenings. For weeks, I'd say "hello", and she'd blank me. I kept doing it because each time it, without fail, it would make me chuckle.

Bike - train - bike commuting is good for this. Let me think - there's the tall bloke on the road bike, and the man with the not-very-folding folder. There used to be a couple of other Bromptoners, but I haven't seen either of them for a while. There's a chap with a "mezzo" (I think) folder who I see quite a lot. The only one I've chatted to regularly is the guy with the curly hair who had a nasty accident (car turned across him as he was going downhill) but does seem to be back on the bike now.

Chap that works in the butchers.
Bloke that works for the council and took part in the Nocturne last year (we also had a chat while he was in a van one day)
My next door but one neighbour who I sometimes meet on the climb up the Bridges and ride with 'till we get to Liberton Brea where he gets away.
Plus a few others I am on nodding terms with.

Here for rides.
A slightly crazy looking guy on a very old Raleigh bike that seems far too big for him

A very rotund bearded chap who rides whatever the weather on his too small BSO

A charming middle aged lady on her dutch bike complete with wicker basket. (and based on where I see here she is coming in from at least 6 miles out)

I see a few often, one bloke going towards boarshaw as I'm coming home in the evening always let on(no idea what bike he has).
There was one bloke I'd see occasionaly from Rochdale triathlon club(stickers on the bike) who'd scalp me not far from home but I havent seen him since oct ish....not up for the cold weather I suppose.

Another going home on a blue surosa(maybe orbea) up Oldham rd from Manchester(he can shift).
See a dispatch bloke on a cream surly(I think) never lets on....maybe because I'm not a fixie rider.

Oh and loads of chinese up by winyip on bikes that look like they'd stole them from thier kids.

I tend to nod if looked at by others, sometimes I dont notice because I'm gawping at thier bikes.

oh, multimoding. In that case....

The bromptonauts don't deign to speak to inferior species in these parts, but I see a fair few Dahon's when I train+bike. None of the regulars own a Strida though.

I see a guy going the opposite way to me who is always riding on the pavement despite there being hardly any traffic about as it's so early in the morning.
Also see a lady most mornings sometimes walking but other times jogging down the road at 5am and she must be in her 60's

One guy I see in Gatley now and again who always waves/lets on, most of the others don't bother.
Sometimes pass a lad near Stockport who's bike makes the most alarming squealing noise I can't believe anyone would ride a bike in that condition

Where about is this Potsy? If you are in the Portwood to Bredbury area and in the last couple of months of last year (2010) you might be talking about me. I pass there around 6.00-6.15 in the evening heading towards Stockport and then around 7.15-7.20 in the mornings heading back up hill towards Bedbury when I am working. I did have terrible trouble with squealing brakes at first but it seems to be cured now. It was so bad that car drivers would stop and look around for the source of the sound.

How would I recognise you if I am crossing your path?

I rarely see any other cyclists when I'm commuting.

I saw on of my "regulars" this morning, after the RAB where the MTB rider never looks behind him there is a long drag, about 1km, in the distance I saw a faint red twinkling light and as I go closer I recognised who it was, the light was still faint. Since he was on a MTB with fat knobbly tyres he was going very slowly so I wizzed past with no time for greetings as I was doing my observations before positioning myself for a right turn at the approaching RAB.

Dont often see many cyclists at all during my commute, maybe the odd one but no one I would describe as a regular. Which is a shame as I would love to see more and indulge in a bit of commuter racing.
Female cyclists are as rare as rocking horse shoot, which is also a real shame.
