Ooh, good but what units are distances to towns, next services, etc quoted in on road signs?

:boxing:

(PS, I'm sure you know this is just a bit of fun?)

I normally specify it in time rather than distance.

I don't use road signs I just guess where I am going and hope for the best .

I'm reminded of Lee Dixon, the former Arsenal full back. He said that one of the advantages of playing at home was that he knew where he was on the pitch because he recognised the faces of season ticket holders.

I see people that I don't know, and will probably never share a conversation with, but their faces stick. Our ability to remember a face is a wonderful thing.

OK, I give in. Your one way ticket to Germania is in the post. Heil Hitler!

Mean while, back on topic. I do see a few regulars during my TEN MILE commute and have yet to befriend any but will keep trying.

According to wikipedia, the fountain of all knowledge.

"The idea of a metric system has been attributed to John Wilkins, first secretary of the Royal Society of London in 1668".

So the idea was British but implemented by the French.

See a few boys out on the Coast Road in the morning, and on the way home pass a racer near Wallsend, i also pass a Ninja on a fixie with the worst lights ever.

Always give them a nod but nobody really says hello! Shame really.

Used to see a guy on a fixed most mornings going away from town - looked like nice bike (I liked the colour!).
I've since moved so not the same route anymore.

Now I see fairly often a couple on a tandem (they both look old enough to be just-retired, but then I have no idea why they'd be cycling along in Manchester at about 8:30am regularly...)

Female cyclists are as rare as rocking horse shoot, which is also a real shame.

I commute to and from Sunderland :hello:.

I see a couple of guys but they are difficult to identify as they wear those work overalls/waterproof outfits and don't have lights.

I, however, have bright lights and my lovely Altura Nightvision jacket, in Raspberry (AKA bright bright pink). You can't miss me.

I always smile and say Hi.

Where about is this Potsy? If you are in the Portwood to Bredbury area and in the last couple of months of last year (2010) you might be talking about me. I pass there around 6.00-6.15 in the evening heading towards Stockport and then around 7.15-7.20 in the mornings heading back up hill towards Bedbury when I am working. I did have terrible trouble with squealing brakes at first but it seems to be cured now. It was so bad that car drivers would stop and look around for the source of the sound.

How would I recognise you if I am crossing your path?

Not you pal, those times are a bit too normal for me

I'm Portwood to Bredbury about 5.20am or 1.20pm depending on shift pattern. Coming home 2pm or 10pm from Bredbury-ish area.

This was not squeaking brakes, more like a very badly maintained drive train or wheels, I'll be the fat bloke on a white racer wearing a yellow jacket and black tights

I see a guy that I know by sight a lot, pretty sure he has mapped all the local routes for a wesbite as theres a bike in a few of the pictures and it looks a lot like his.

I smile and wave at everybody though cos this is the country and we aren't all miserable

I see more people walking dogs (or just walking) than I do on bikes. Get a few mornings here and there but don't tend to get saluations consistently from a single person. Most dog walkers tend to stop and stand to the side of the road, which is obviously good practice for the dog but it makes me feel guilty as it seems like they are "diving" out of the way - when I give them almost the whole road (country lane) as space.

In the summer I see a slightly stocky bloke in work boots and sometimes get a slight nod, but mostly stares.

Recently I have been seeing another oldish bloke with rack and panniers that rides in the dark too with decent lights and has said morning a few times - I also reckon its the person that snuck up besides me once and mentioned to my surprise about my rear light being on (no shoot!)

In the snow I have been seeing other fresh tracks from someone on narrowish semi-slicks - going my direction so not seen them yet. This is the hardcore snow weather which even some people on here would think im mental for commuting in.
