do people get to claim expenses from the company?

start claiming for chains etc, anything that is suffering from premature wear and tear due to being sat outside.

You don't work for PlusNet do you?

Not PlusNet, no.

Thats what I would do however I have always been a bit militant bugger. As much as it should not, much depends on how long the OP has worked for the company. In the current climate probably not the best thing to be doing making yourself stand out xx(

I've been working here since Feb and been pushing for Cycle to Work scheme for the last 2/3 months, with no joy. Don't think I'll push any of it further. Don't think it will be worth the hassle in the long term.

Sign of the times I'm afraid. Since the smoking ban smokers now huddle in the bike sheds. Nothing quite beats that smell after 12 mile cycle ride, ciggie butts everywhere, horrible xx(
.. like being back at school !!:biggrin:

No idea, possibly not legally obligated, but it certainly seems to be the norm.
.. at our place they're not even allowed to smoke on site, not even in the car park. So they all end up standing just outside the front gate.:evil:

No sheds here at all, but I have got a nice little sheltered corner of the car park, surrounded on three sides by building. That keeps things fairly dry, unless the rain is coming from the wrong direction.

Think about finding a more cycle friendly job, bit extreme but that would p1ss me right off, I am lucky, showers, bike sheds and a company that promotes cycle to work.

Plus I got a driver bollocked the other day, on site, looks left, looks right, car coming but miles away, sets off to walk to my bike, car gets hoofed as I am walking across and goes past me at perhaps 50, I sh1t myself, the security guard clocked it as well, strongly yet hunmourously worded email to the site manager got him bollocked, selfish, agressive tosser in an Aston Martin, next time he isnt allowed to bring it on site.

Bad luck there, adam. We used to have a bike rack and showers but both have now been taken away. Bring the bike inside, locked at the bottom of a stairwell or something, possibly...

As much as I'm in favour of a bit of militancy, maybe locking your bike in a stairwell is not the best idea. If a stairwell, or anywhere else indoors, is in anyway connected to a fire exit your employers would be allowed to have the bike removed on H&S grounds.

What a petty and disingenuous bunch these bosses are!

That's too bad, and it certainly doesn't promote healthier employees. I would be tempted to cart my bike up to my place of work and start keeping it locked up beside my desk or start storing it in safe but highly inconvenient places (but I know that might not be a good idea for your career.)

Ultimately you're in the best position to tell how far you can go and who to communicate your unhappiness about this to. I don't mean to sound defeatist or passive, but I think you have to weigh up what your options are and their possible future ramifications (e.g. if I was on the point of retiring, I'd be kicking up such a stink and doing everything and anything to make sure the company was known to be doing this -however, if I just started -and given the state of the economy! -it might be better to let this issue rest and start accepting your bike is stored somewhere else.)

Just as a bit of a side note - Whats peoples positions on Bike shelters being next to shower facilities ?
Is this the norm ?

Our Shower facilities are going to be in 1 area, 400 yards to the bike shelter and then another 400yds to get to work.

Means I will have to lug all my stuff from Bike shelter to showers and vice versa.

Well, you've got showers. Were hoping for some, an area has been found and it's only 20 yards from the shelter. The good thing with our new shelter is that there is only 6 feet of uncovered walking to do from my building to shelter. So can get overshoes on before I go out, without worrying about wearing them out....

Try the cover - I've used one for years on and off. This is the first time I've ever had a 'weatherproof' shelter. Make sure you tuck it under the wheels or it will blow away in the wind.

If your employer has several offices, I can only guess that they are a relatively large organisation, employing a fairly decent number of people.

Write to the local newspapers (yours, and the one where the shlter is to be reinstalled). Be Offended Of Odiham in true Daily Mail style. Be bombastic, make sure it gets in.

Ask your boss how people are expected to learn to smoke if there aren't any bike sheds to do it behind.

Mind you, I learned to ride a bike behind the tobacconist

Dont let the bstards beat you, I work for a local council who are very keen on people cycling and have provided 3 cycle shelters, cyclist showers, lockers and a drying room. Its fantastic we have our own cycle officer who looks after the intrests of cyclists.

My point is that councils are generally proactive towards legislation which may be around the corner which helps prevent any halfway / interim measures which prove to be a waste of money. Smokers in my place of work have to leave the grounds to smoke ie 300mm walk to the perimeter wall and the smokers outway the cyclists.

Depending on how far you wish to push the issue with your employer I would suggest getting the cyclists together and writing a letter / email detailing your requirments. Initially try to meet them halfway and ask for a designated area where they could install a limited number of racks and purchase a cover to protect your bike let your employer see that a need exists for a shelter. Alternativley speak to your local MP and ask them to persue the issue on your behalf.

As a last resort you could claim a disability which prevents you from driving or using public transport and only permits you to travel on a bicycle. Under the Disability Discrimination Act your Employer will be legally bound to provide you with the facilities you need to remove any barriers against your disability.
