Removing glue from wood

If it's old then the glue was heated to make it runny,applied and then allowed to cool and bond - so all you need do is reverse the process and apply a bit of gentle heat until the bond breaks down.Try not to burn the piece though.

the glue was based on animal parts and will give off a nice whiff when heated so do it outside!

depending on what you mean by "the glue attaching it is unsightly"

if there is glue visible on the outside of the join (ie, you can touch it) then you can sand it with the leg in place, neaten it up and put a bit of model filler in the gaps and smooth it to look like the leg has always been there and is meant to not be removed.

as someone else has said, a bit of heat plus a sharp tap with something, the glue should break away - be careful tho, the glue can be stronger than the surrounding wood and so may require some sanding and filling to get a smooth surface where the leg had been.

if your painting or varnishing i'd go with the first option and a bit of wood stain (or just use wood filler actually) to neaten up before varnishing (not needed if painting)
