like being able to see.
Indeed. As far as I'm aware, apart from now being 25 metres instead of 25 yards which at least is a wee bit further,, the 'reading a number plate' test hasn't changed in over fifty years.
As we're 'advised' to get our eyes tested at leat every two years, maybe a rule of a optometrist's confirmation of effective eyesight to be competent to drive after the age of say, fifty should be introduced - ?

All drivers are any age should have regular approved eye tests. Mrs D started losing her sight at 33.

As a vocational C+E licence holder, and am over 70, I have to have a medical annually.
This checks all the relevant bits that might wear out or drop off. 👍

Be aware, that if renewing licence at age 70, and you wish to keep, for example, class C1 (to all you to drive vehicles > 3500kg, eg. Some motorhome), you need to do it “manually” and have a medical.

It's actually 20 metres, just over 65 ft. That's about the same as it always was.

It was reduced from 20.5 to 20 with the introduction of the slightly smaller number plate font, so roughly the same. Odd that hald a metre would make sufficient difference but presumably someone set and worked it out.

Just a shout out for DVLA. Super easy web page, super easy as they access your photo and signature from your passport details.

What if you don't have a passport? The only photo ID I have is a bus pass, which I'm guessing isn't a fat lot of use to them. Mine comes up for renewal next year.

I'm guessing Big John is on an old paper licence like me. Sadly you'll have to have a passport style photo for your new licence. Sadly I'll have to replace mine when we hopefully move next yr.

I'm on the waiting list for a cataract removal from my left eye. I had the other one done two years ago and there was such an improvement (I don't need glasses to read anymore) I'm hoping I can ditch the specs completely.
