After 5 years on the original cables my gears were getting a bit lazy. Indexing wasn't always spot on and the rear derailleur felt a bit 'lazy' on the up shifts, almost as if the spring wasn't strong enough to pull the chain across. I had replaced the rear inner cable a couple of times as it had a habit of fraying within the shifter.

I had been meaning to replace the cables and outers for a while but did it yesterday. What a difference. Shifting is as crisp as it was the day I got the bike. The force needed to upshift is so light once more.

I don't think I will leave it so long next time. £15 well spent.

Yep, they don't last forever and while they can be nursed along with occasional lubrication it is usually a revelation to experience a new cable set that has been fitted well.

That reminds me, I need to check if the cause of one of my gears levers not returning is the state of the cable.

Nice isn't it.
I change inners every year after winter.
Both when it becomes necessary, usually 2 years
