Hi,

I have some Specialized BG elite shoes that I got for the princely sum of £30 from a guy who had bought the wrong size and couldn't be bothered to return them. Sadly after around 1500 miles part of the clip for the ratchet strap has broken and they're useless

I've been happy with them, especially for the price but I've noticed that the newest ones still use the same clip which is a weak point so might look elsewhere. I have a budget of £100 max, what other alternatives should I consider ?

To be honest I was just going to pick up some bog standard Shimano R088 or similar (£60 on Merlin) but I thought I'd ask here first.

Thank you,

malty

Ones that fit

If buying online and not 100% sure of sizing, buy from Wiggle, Evans, CRC (on a price match if needed) as they, unlike Merlin, have free returns

Have you double checked that you can't get a new ratchet part, some manufacturers, including Specilized, sell spares

I know specialized 47's fit me and I know that Shimano 47's fit me as I've had three pairs so don't mind buying online but thank you for the tip. I might buy price match/click and collect from my local evans so I can try them in store.

I can't get a replacement part as the bit that's broken is the plastic bit that's sewn into the shoe strap itself

Thank you for the reply.

I am surprised you cant fix them I have the BG Comps and the buckle/ratchet is screwed onto the shoe and the strap part that goes into the ratchet comes away from the leather part and is replaceable I have changed my 4 year old ones once.

It's sewn into the top strap, the clip that the ratchet strap passes through. I can't see how you can replace it without unpicking it then re sewing.

Oh right you haven't snapped the removable strap you have snapped the bit the strap passes through.

If I was you I would pop into the nearest Specialized shop or call them because that part shouldn't fail and they may be able to help you, or if you could get that part from specialized and just pop into a leather/shoe repair shop and get them to sew it in.

Thanks.

I have just emailed their customer services with the picture but tbh I don't hold out much hope since I don't have any proof of purchase or anything.

I'm inclined to just buy something else as I need them roughly every other day.

Thank you.

I know what you mean and I hope you get a favorable response. I have found that a lot cycle equipment manufacturers can be very helpful when they want to be, I have had jackets that zips have failed replaced years after I have bought them so good luck.

Got a response from specialized which was just to return them to the original store but I can't do that.

I've picked up a pair of Fizik R3 as they are heavily discounted at planet x. Worth a try at the £60 price tag.

Failing that if they don't fit or I can't get on with them, I think I might well go for another pair of the same specialized as I know I get on with them, and just be careful with the buckle.

My Fizik R3 arrived yesterday. Felt weird for the first half hour and then felt amazing for the next hour of my ride. Very very happy with them and they feel so "connected" (probably due to being much stiffer sole than my specialized) to the pedals that I feel much more powerful, especially when climbing. It's probably marginal to say the least but if it feels better then it's good enough in my books.

Certainly worth more than the £60 that Planet X are knocking them out at !

I got 47. I hover between 47 and 48 in normal shoes. I'd say they are slightly roomier than my 47 specialized but do up really nicely

Thanks for that. I am a UK11 in normal shoes but had a 48 in a Shimano RO64 that was too big.

Not sure whether to go 45 or 47 in the Fizik as they have sold out of 46...

Definitely 47 I'd say. Most of my running shoes are 11. My shimano mt43 are 47 and fit perfectly. If shimano 48 was too big I'd say fizik 47 will be ok
