Hi all. Sad circumstances in that I've had my second Croix de Fer 20 stolen. Despite fact its on gumtree for £100 I'm kind of thinking police aren't going to get anywhere if they haven't already. Those frustrations deserve a thread all of their own.

So, anyway, I'm torn between

  • another CdF 20 or 30 (hoping to get previous MY for a discount!)
  • an Equilibrium Disc 30 on sale in my LBS for c1500
  • or going crazy and getting a Shand Stoater, and tell myself I deserve it even if I can't afford it.
Obv I know what the CdF is like - but interested to hear from anyone who has the latter two.

What will I use it for? Well, day to day stuff, winter road cycling (have a carbon road bike already, albeit not high end), the odd trail (but nothing too technical as I have an mountain bike if I really need it). What does it need to do that the road bike and mt bike can't? Multi day bikepacking tours - 2 to 3 day probably - with or without a rack. Only thing that is steering me away from the CdF (other than a feeling its the safe option) is I thought maybe good to get something a bit lighter but sturdy enough for the above. As you might have guessed, steel is what I've been thinking.

If got the Eq disc (which has Fulcrum Racing Sport wheels as stock) I'd probably need to get stronger wheels, 4 season disc have been recommended. My thinking is I could swap in the stock wheels and the new wheels with knobblies/slicks on each respectively. But is Eq disc just the wrong bike for my needs, even with swapped out tyres?

PS - happy to hear alternative suggestions to those I've mentioned above obv!

Buy yours back for £100? And get better locks esp if buying a very expensive bike. Your insurers will hammer your premiums if another bike stolen!

Get any bike marked as a deterrent. Presumably if the police had marked your bike they might be more inclined to recover as they’d have proof

Of course I've tried to buy it back for £100, even offered more. I have decent locks but they weren't on the bikes. Insurers havent been contacted because I know they won't pay out. Bikes were in process of being taken round to back garden but after a 7 hour train journey with two greeting kids and a bike trailer and pannier bags, process took longer than it should have - a locked gate was in between them and the bikes, but they were just in right place at right time.

When I said any other suggestions, I meant re other bikes, not suggestions to get my bike back (separate thread on that) or to deter future thieves.

I’d go for the Eq disc. Not sure the frame would take fat knobbly tyres even without mudguards

..or a PX Ti if you can push to 2k?

Or the Pickenflick is £1700 and 10kg

Or a Spa Elan?

Maybe look at an alu framed gravel bike otherwise, maybe lighter than the Croix, GT grade or Spesh Diverge popular options

Have you given up hope already?

If we dont get your bike back. The only other choice is another CDF.

I would want my original bike back though.

No, not given up hope. But its four weeks now and knowing how long I'll take to procrastinate over a replacement it'll be 8 weeks before I do anything!

If I knew where it was, I'd go get it - as there's stuff that will identify it as mine. A postcode isn't enough and the police won't give me the actual address. Plus is he really gonna have it in his house still after four weeks?

I thought you had been in contact with the seller/thief. If they are selling it and you've offered the asking price, where is the issue?

I'm not trying to be funny but it seems that there isn't something quite right here

The EQ disc will take 33 inch knobblies the LBS tells me - without guards. Has 28s on it as stock. With an ultegra groupset and hydraulics, its tempting if I can get round my tyre/wheel nervousness. PX Ti Meteor looks lovely for roads, but the Tempest at 2.5k may be better suited to my varied needs, and thats a bit of a stretch.

Myself and several others have offered him asking price via Gum tree. He's not replying. The guy the police believe it is.... they put note through his door or perhaps his parents door asking him to return it and giving him my phone number. He called to say he " hadnt chored my bike".

The Spa Elan looks like it could be a goer though! Never tried ti before and this ones a good bit cheaper than the CdF at 3500 and many others out there. Thanks!

Croix de Fer Ti...? or is that over budget?

This years model is definitely over budget at 3500. Have been looking for previous year models at discount, but either not in my size or not discounted enough. They seem to crop up on ebay - one sold for 1500 this morning but it was collection only from other end of country.
