A bike mechanic told me I needed a new headset, but that he did not have any because of the current chain supply problem. He said if I could get the component he would fit it. I can get them on Amazon, only I don't know what sort I need to get. I suspect it's a 1 1/8".

What we're the symptons of your current one?
I am a bit clueless with headsets as well, but one of mine was grating. I loosened everything off and applied grease as much as I could. Tightened everything up again and it was all OK again.

Not sure if we have all the information on this one. For a "normal" loose headset, you would just give the top nut another half turn to tighten it up. If this resulted in stiff or notchy steering, it would be over tightened. If you can't get that sweet spot where the steering is free and there is no movement in the fork steerer, then probably it would be in need of a new headset.

If you trust the mechanics, then follow their advice.
Good luck
