Replacing a QR with a nutted axel, where to buy?

Following around ten hours in a car with fixie riding friends yesterday I had a bit of a road to Damascus type moment with regards to why the rear wheel on my SingleSpeed is forever popping out. I'm currently using a cheapo QR skewer.

So now I'm looking for a nutted axle, and the good word has it that I need 15mm nuts (fnar). Stuffed if I can find them on the Wiggle site, or just about anywhere else for that matter. I can find 10mm but not 15mm.

My current QR appear to be 5mm thick.

With standard hubs that's usually only possible using these things, and there are more up-market (and more expensive) ones. They stay done up better than QRs and deter thieves a bit.

To use traditional nutted attachment to the bike needs the right hub, and Wiggle do sell them -link to example.

The nuts are usually 15mm.

I have the nutted version of the Shimano dynamo hub on my round-town bike to deter thieving, and have a small ratchet spanner for it in the little tool bag I often carry.

I don't know if ready built wheels are available with nutted hubs.

Don't know if the above is the right one, but if you can take your current one apart first to compare you should be OK.
But at £20 for just an axle, almost worth buying a whole new rear wheel, but a new track wheel will be 120mm width, so may need additional spacers if currently riding a frame originally for gears.

You might find that your LBS has old stock in their back room.

The outer section of the QR should be a 10mm threaded tube just replace this with a solid bar axle and 2 standard nuts and washers. Bit of a faff about and make sure you keep all the cones etc in order, good opportunity to service the bearings though:whistle:

I'm still confused by this. I see a lot of 10mm nutted axels, but what the deuce is the 10mm bit?

The space between my dropouts is 132mm, the distance from the outside edge of one side of the dropouts to the outside edge of the drops is 144mm. The diameter of the QR skewer is 4.7mm :crazy:

So will this work?

Remove skewer , remove cone lock nut, remove washer , remove cone, slide out 10mm axle tube, catch bearings (or search round on floor for bearings) repeat on other side of 10mm threaded axle tube refit cone and washer/lock ring to 10mm threaded axle, fit bearings in with grease, slide solid axle part way in, fit bearings to other side race then slide axle home, refit cones and adjust. Told you it was a bit of a faff but you may be lucky and they may be sealed bearings which are easier. Good luck :excl:

If it has sealed, cartridge bearings, they won't go on that axle.
I thought they just slid onto the axle and were retained by the pair of nuts each side, Never stripped one down (yet) and think the only wheels I have with the possibility of sealed bearings are my Roval Classique Pave.:unsure:
