Wow, that chain tool is more knackered than mine! I've ordered a Park tool one on recs from another thread. My chain is working like a charm with no noise. Mind you I do have a SRAM rear mech and replaced my crappy Taya one with another SRAM.

Am i sad when i actually count the links on both chain to compensate for chain stretch when measuring the chains against each other?

No. If you had the right number on the old chain.

After doing eactly what you say to check it a couple of times I just hang them up side by side and assume that if the chain wear is between .75 and 1 on the guage the new one needs to be one link shorter than the old one appears to be. (worked it out in days before guages though).

It's important though, if changing chainrings or cassette at the same time, to go back to measuring it properly on the bike.
