I need to replace the headset in my Surly Crosscheck because I damaged the original one when I fitted it (due to not reading the instructions properly) and after nearly 3,500km the bearings are rattling over every bump! At the same time, I'm replacing a standard headset with a cyclocross headset with integrated cable hanger, which will make for a better cable run to the front brake.
Original headset is FSA Orbit MX
New headset it FSA Orbit X-CX
I have all the correct tools required to do this job, and I know what I need to do, so that isn't a problem, but I have a question about the crown race. When I first fitted the headset, I couldn't get the crown race to seat correctly on the fork, despite having a proper tool, and had to take it to the lbs (where the mechanic did it in an irritatingly quick 10 seconds!)
I assume crown races are not standard, but there's a good chance manufacturers will save costs by using the same components where possible across the same line (ie FSA's Orbit line). Do I need to change the crown race, or can I stick with the one I've got? Is there any way to check for certain?
Also, I assume I won't need to replace the star nut. Not a major problem if I have to, but I've got a long steerer tube on the Surly, and I'd rather not spend time pushing the current one through if it isn't necessary.
