Near Aldgate, London, this morning. Driver of a very large lorry delivering for a well-known retailer. I took his number and rang their HQ, who seemed to take it very seriously "Oh, we'll definitely act on this" said the lady on the 'phone.

It was the right thing to do, especially in light of recent road deaths. So why do I feel so guilty?

Don't feel guilty.

He knew it's illegal. He knew it's dangerous. He knew it's against company policy. But he still made a conscious decision to do it, because he thought he would get away with it. If a few more drivers get caught and suffer the consequences, maybe it'll dissuade others.

Don't feel guilty. If he receives a b0ll0cking all to the good. You don't know, he might frequently use his mobile phone whilst driving a truck. Maybe he has already been warned so with any luck he will lose his job. Better than him continuing to drive and dial risking killing or seriously injuring some one. You should instead be thinking f*ck 'im, serves him right .

You could also call the Driving Standards Agency who might be rather interested as he is an HGV driver. They were when I called them about a lunatic bus driver . I was one of a few passengers who were all scared sh1tless. The only time I have been on a bus in 10 years. Never again.

Do you have any footage? If so call plod.

Let this be a warning to all motons - you are being watched .

Thanks all - feel better now.

I'm one of those people who ends up thinking; "But what if he has a wife and kids? What if he loses his job? What if his house gets repossessed?"

Then I thought "I bet he wouldn't want his wife and kids sharing the road with HGV drivers using their phones."

Well if he collides with something or someone he is bound to lose his job, hopefully be prosecuted by the police and then all the other financial problems kick in, plus his wife and kids will know about it as he will be around the house watching daytime TV, plus there may be some adverse publicity ......

You did the right thing. Hopefully his employer will as well. Who was it?

It was probably his employer on the phone, if my (past) experience is anything to go by. Not that that's an excuse.
You did the right thing, by the way. I wouldn't have thought he'd lose his job, but the transport manager should have a word with him.

Call me paranoid, but I don't really wanna say in case HGV man comes googling. There's a branch on practically every high street.

And how pray is he going to find out your true identity and place of abode - we don't even know that Mr Whicker unless you are Mr Whicker who resides in the Channel Islands?

I thought he was dead

No, I'm very much alive. "Unkilled. Uninjured. Onpressing." As I once wrote in a telegram when mistakenly reported dead.

Joking apart, I was once tracked to my old flat by someone who'd worked out where I lived by posts I'd put on a forum. They just wanted to drop off a CV in person, but it was a bit disturbing. As I said - call me paranoid.

A someone with a brother who drives HGV in london, I can categorically state they deserve all they get. The money they earn (£5-600 a week minimum, my bro clears £800) means a hands-free set is within their grasp.

No excuses.

I was going to post that you did the right thing, but I'll pop around and tell you in person tomorrow.

+1 They should be banned for stupidity if nothing else. A fiver to protect your licence and job? Its a no-brainer. Of course if you have no brain to begin ...
