Near Aldgate, London, this morning. Driver of a very large lorry delivering for a well-known retailer. I took his number and rang their HQ, who seemed to take it very seriously "Oh, we'll definitely act on this" said the lady on the 'phone.

It was the right thing to do, especially in light of recent road deaths. So why do I feel so guilty?

Because you never reported it to the police?

Glad you raised the incident though, these people get away with this stuff far too easily. A person in a vehicle of that size really should be operating at a heightened level of awareness. He has no excuse, you can get into trouble for using a phone whilst cycling: if you go into the back of a car whilst doing this on a bike it will not compare to doing it in a truck.

... a hands-free set is within their grasp.

A fiver to protect your licence and job?
I feel compelled to point out that, whilst holding a mobile is illegal, using one hands-free has been shown to be no less dangerous.

Twenty Inch, i'll have the kettle on.

Thanks again all. I'm not even sure now why I felt guilty. When I used to ride a motorsickle I was always tapping on phone-drivers windows and wagging my finger.

A few weeks ago i was on a main road when a delivery lorry pulled out on me from a left side road, good job I was aware and ready for what happened as I had a gut feeling that's what he was about to do seeing as he was approaching the junction with phone to his ear and by the look of it didn't want to stop seeing as he only had one hand available to drive the lorry, the other was clamped around his phone...

I did manage to stop just in time to avoid hitting his rear wheels, I was that mad I just ranted at him as he drove off, should have done what you had done and reported him, I defo would not feel guilty...

I should have pointed out that I've reported mobile drivers several times before, if they're driving a vehicle with a company phone number on the side. I always felt a bit guilty, but Bolstered by these replies I don't any more.

In fact, I reported the driver of a Beemer using his phone this morning to the Met's roadsafelondon site this morning. You wouldn't believe the amount of brain power it took to remember his reg all the way to work. He was also doing about 40MPH in a 20 zone, next to a primary school and OAP home.
