I've asked before...

Please could we paste the text of an article (say a News Item) not just a link without any other explaination. We can then see whether it's of interest or not before having to open it and find it of no consequesnce. Work servers in particular can run slow at peak times.

Also, Youtube.
Please say what the link is going too, i.e a band/song or a description of the clip rather than just post a URL without further explaination. Again, saves wasting time and bandwidth...

Fair enough, but what about the link in your sig, people may click on that fully expecting to see a video of you cycling etc then waste the bandwidth at work?

Nice touch to be thinking of your employers when you write all this!

My sig is not the topic of a post though and it does give some illustration

That's the beauty of the internet, links. It's what makes it work, if you just copy everything from everywhere to everywhere else - it sort of goes even slower  . It might be convenient to have it in front of you, but kind of defeats the object IMO. Maybe just copy the relevant text?

That said, I agree that a description of some form is in order, especially if slightly iffy.

Just my opinion

The problem is that this will give licence to posters like Linf who are in the habit of pasting in feature length articles.

As a compromise could I suggest that posters provide a short precise of an article with a link for those who want to read the whole thing.

Heh Fab, I do paste the whole link...as I get the feeling no-one really clocks on them otherwise...

...and it pulls the thread in the direction you want it to go....
