Yes, often sit down, especially on long tough rides. Sometimes desperately so if I've overdone it/need to steel myself. Well remember reccying one ride (it was so tough I never inflicted it on anyone) where I shamelessly lay on the verge silenty praying for a helicopter to give me a lift home. And another time when the bonk hit lay in a verge plucking blackberries off a bush thoughtfully put there - after some serious natural sugar I recovered. Often sit down, if wearing the posher lycra may put something under me. My favourite stops are churchyards - quite often pop round the back for a few fistfuls of recuperative Lidl wine gums and to brew up a double shot of espresso. Or maybe two double espressos.

A good bench with a backrest always hits the spot. The Chester Greenway, from the Hawarden Bridge end, is richly supplied with flat stone seats which I ride past with disdain, until I'm almost too knackered to get off the bike by the time I reach the real benches.

The first time I did my Chester Zoo route I collapsed in a field, used my trainers as a pillow, and lay there for about half an hour. The second time, I was very much looking forward to doing the same thing, but the bloody gate was closed. So I eventually found a bench. With a backrest.

You know I’ve never really given it much thought. I don’t tend to rest on rides to be honest, then again I don’t venture much above 50 miles so no need.

I’m due a rest day ride tomorrow so might head for a nice local picturesque spot, have a lie down and a snooze in the sunshine. Much nicer than lying on the sofa.
