Our company joined the Halfords Cycle to work scheme. The scheme is run by Halfords, but they say they can get pretty much any bike, so I rang their helpdesk to see whether they could source a Cube Peloton Race for me. They offered a choice of two dealers, one in Bury and one in Sheffield, and it occurred to me that it would be far better for me if my local LBS (a Cube dealer) could supply the bike. I therefore put the LBS owner in touch with Halfords and after a week of negotiating he has been accepted onto their list of approved scheme suppliers.

SO, I get a shiny new Peloton Race for £600 or so, and my LBS get money that I did not particularly want to spend elsewhere. It also means of course that I don't have to have a bike through the post, or drive all the way to Lancashire if anything goes wrong. Hoorah!

How much are you saving on the deal. I find that shops who do cycle to work dont do discount with the scheme and nowadays the discount is often similar to the savings you make on the scheme since it changed.

Bike shops dont like cycle to work as it cuts their margin.

Someone else tried to make the same point.

RRP of a Peloton Race 2012 is £1000. I am a 40% tax payer, and will be given the bike at the end of the 12 month period. I will have to pay tax on the final valuation in order to receive it, and my total will be £680.

I cannot find anywhere that will discount the Cube. It's this year's model, and the model it replaces sold out in about June of this year, but I did find one in a bike shop. I was offered it for "about 850". I sincerely doubt anyone will want to discount it by 32%.

SO, I get to save £320 and then benefit from 12 months interest free credit.

My LBS has done the maths and has decided as log as he sells a few he'll make enough of a profit to make it worthwhile. Don't forget he'll also be selling some accessories and after care. . He isn't relying on the C2W to stay in business.
