i fractured the ligament in my collar bone after a crash about 2 weeks ago. although i now have more or less full movement back and can go most of the day without needing any pain relief (oddly, lying in bed is most uncomfortable). there is still an odd 'lump' in my shoulder, so guess it's not properly healed.

i'm back at the clinic tomorrow but as any non-cyclist opines that i'd be mad to ride again in case i fell off (ignoring my pleas that the only spills i've had are due to ice and, in this case, touching a wheel) and don't understand that i can ride avoiding the sort of conditions where a crash might happen.

so, assuming i ride somewhere with a decent amount of surface grip with a good gap between me and any other cyclist, will i be ok to ride now?

cheers in advance ;)

Try sitting on a bike and what it's like holding the handlebars tight. Any pain or weakness then I would forget it. In the past I've had 4 weeks off the bike before Christmas from choice to give myself a break. Another couple of weeks off the bike won't do you any harm and may do wonders for your enthusiasm.

why on earth ask here?

Ask your doctor. Some injuries benefit from working in the recovery phase, others will be set back and made much worse.

..........and your doctor knows this? A physiotherapist maybe or a sports doctor but a GP? I doubt it.

Who said anything about GP? - the op is clearly under the control of a specialist who he will be seeing in clinic tomorrow - try reading properly before making the smart arse reply

You posted doctor and not specialist. I think I read that properly. After all I don't want to be a smart arse.........and I did say consult a sports doctor, and not a GP did I not? Say what you mean then there won't be any confusion and you won't run the risk of a reply that upsets your delicate demeanor.

By the way when it comes to recovery even they know less than you when it comes to deciding if you're fit and well.

to clear things up, the a & e doctor reckoned 3 weeks, and the specialist seemed unconcerned as long as i didn't fall off.

i was wanting a cyclist's view to supplement the medical one, as i know i'm not likely to fall off again any time soon and all non-cyclists do is worry i'll fall off and break it again.

Hi Alec, sit on the bike and see if there are aches and pains as suggested above-sounds like your fracture was serious for you to need some amount of time off. i've known downhillers and MT bikers to ride with collarbone fractures- the lump will take some time to go down but see how you fare and don't ride through the pain in this case.

bloody consultant has told me to wait 5 weeks xx(

why do people think i'm going to fall off again? one crash in four years that was a result of me not looking at the rear wheel 6" in front of me; all i need to do is avoid ice and maybe group riding 'til it's healed, but because the medics have spoken i'm off the road
