I have been given this bike by a friend. It belong to his brother who died and has been sitting in a shed for 6 or 7 years. Picture is off my crap phone but its in pretty shocking condition except for the frame.

Is it worth doin up or just scrap it? I have no idea how much reconditioning it would cost as I am new to cycling.

Internal rust could be a problem on an old frame

Well its been bashed about last few days and haven't heard any rust rattling about so if it is there it isn't flaking. The exterior is just bad patches of bubbling surface rust. Unsightly and a pain but nothing major.

Quill stem the handlebar attachment? Thats fine. Seat post is jammed at the moment but it is starting to move slowly. I was gonna do this in my spare room but I think I'll take it to my step brothers workshop for a week until its stripped and I know whats what.

Saddle looks beyond repair to me... One from Lidl or Asda will cost very little to be going on with, then if everything else OK it will have to be swopped for a Brooks.

I am recovering the saddle. Its cleaned up ok and with some spray insulation foam I can probably sort the little pieces missing in the seat padding. Leather for recover cost me £2.99 so if it doesn't work its no biggy.

So far I every thing bar the head set and the cables off the bike. It was surprising easy as behind all the rust was a well greased and lubed bike. Mick (the previous owner) used to love his bike so you can see upto a point he maintained it pretty well. After breaking the initial bond of the rust everything came apart nicely.

So far identity wise :

Weimann drilled Brake levers
Weimann 600 brakes
Raleigh bar post (no markings on the bars found yet)
Laprade SR seat post.
Vetta VSA saddle
Raleigh super custom crankarm 9/16th x 20t
Campagnolo gear shifters and derailleur (still looking for more markings)
52/42 sprockets with no name.
Frame no WA 3000619

Its out, all bike is apart now except for head bearings etc. which are so rusty and pitted I am going to immerse the whole front end in an oil bath over the weekend before I even attempt to undo them.

I am sitting watching a film while starting to clean up the seat post. Not bad so far.
