I believe some of the obscure phrases were used as code between those who understand.
As I understand it, that was the original motivation for the whole business. A similar language emerged among gay men during the pre-legalisation era. A couple of characters in a radio comedy series - Julian & Sandy, in Round the Horne - introduced it to the wider world, and a few Polari terms have entered the mainstream, though the 'parent language' has now completely died out, being no longer needed.

My mother, bless her. Was a true cockney. Born in Bromley By Bow within the sound of the Bow Bells. She had a good turn of Cockney slang.

I've heard straight people use the term 'iron' - iron hoof.

Ruby (Murray) - curry.

Frankie (Vaughan) - porn.
