Ribble r872 build

Hi all ,
First post and although not bad on a road bike, totally shocking on bike builds/repairs.
I have brought a ribble r872 frameset and looking to build it up, more off a time killer due to been out of training due to hernia surgery. What I was hoping if someone could shed some light on chainsets.... the frame has a bb30 bottom bracket am I right to believe that I can't fit a shimano system to that unless I use adapters ? If not what is my best option or what people would recommend. Totally puzzled if I'm honest with this one.

Yes, you’ll need an adapter if you want to use a threaded bearing like Shimano’s Hollowtech or Octalink. http://www.wiggle.com/fsa-bb30-conversion-kit/

Thanks for your reply cycleops, I would prefer to stick with the bb30 bottom bracket if poss. But can't seem to find much choice on chainsets.

I would have thought there are many alternative cranksets for BB30, perhaps ask your LBS. I’m sure members here will have their suggestions too.
Personally wild horses on their blended knees couldn’t persuade me to use a BB30 but I hope it works for you.

By the look of info thats available on the internet the reason there is not a large selection of chain sets is because it's not very popular. They are expensive to manufacture and have to be machined to very high tolerances. Designed to save weight but can creak when in use. There are other versions PF30 and a BB30A which fit the housing. I think the other problem with them is the need for specialist tools to remove and replace. Ok if you use your local guy but a pain in the neck for DIY.

I have PF30 on 2 bikes. One has done 4,500 miles, the other 1,500 miles.

Both still have the factory installed BB’s and not a creak on either so far. Personally, I think it’s down to how well they are fitted and how well you look after them/clean them.

First one has the bog standard FSA PF30 and FSA Gossamer Pro chainset with Compact gearing.

Second one has a SRAM pressfit adapter cup, which allows a Shimano threaded BB to be fitted. I believe it’s a 105 or Ultegra one that it came with. Chainset is an Ultegra with Semi-Compact gearing.

Personally, I prefer the Shimano crank, but the FSA is fine too. Difficult to say which is best as they are 2 different bikes.

If you have the option, I would go down the second route, and fit a Shimano crank as you get a wider choice of chainsets. The cup itself needs the BB threaded in BEFORE pressing into the frame btw. I read some reviews where people tried the opposite and wrecked the threaded cup! Same goes when replacing.

Can you use Campag with a BB30 or PF30 without any adapters then?

If it' a new build with new crankset?
Be aware a lot of new stuff has now gone to 30mm shaft, 11 speed ect up from standard 24mm
