thank you for the advices, i think i will go for the r872 it seems better quality frame, because the GF for me looks more like a poor pinarello imitation and i don't really like the thine tube frame on it.
If using the bike builder/configurator, avoid choosing the Rodi Airline wheels & pay the extra for something a bit better, Mavic Aksium S or Campagnolo Zonda's are good.

They are doing a special on the R872 at the moment with Campag Athena group set & Campag wheels.

The Gran Fondo is one of the most beautiful bikes around in my opinion, and everyone knows, pretty bikes go faster....
Having said that, I bough a Ribble Sportive Racing in Jan and love it.

i know both

That would be a really nice bike. Just be aware that your LBS may not have the tools to service your bottom bracket. It's not a huge problem there should be somewhere close by. I have 2 bikes with campagnolo and 1 with dura ace. I prefer campagnolo, especially the comfort of the hoods.

I'm interested in buying a Sportive Racing on the CTW. I'd more or less decided it would have 105 but I didn't realise some people prefer Campag at a similar price...

I used to until I sold the Shimano bike and had another SRAM one built
I will have to make that choice when one of the groupsets wears out or I swap a bike.

Ah, right. So Campag brake levers are better in that position?

Gears, drops... It's all new to me. The last road bike I had with gears had down tube shifters...
No, SRAM levers are for me, the shape of the hoods suits my hands, slimmer, more ergonomic for me
