An old boy I sometimes drink with did around 216 miles, from Birmingham to North Somerset and back in one day c.1956, on a fixed gear steel bike. His ride preparation consisted of having a pump and puncture kit, and a bottle of pop and a couple of sandwiches in his saddlebag. His day job was maintaining steam locomotives for British Rail, and he used to ride about 14 miles a day getting to and from work. He didn't do any specific pre-ride training, just picked a nice calm weekend and him and his mate, who was also a regular cyclist, just jumped on their bikes and set off early in the morning just as it was getting light.
