Riding through the tip

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
- that's what the local lanes have become. Hedges and ditches filled with discarded fast food packaging, drinks cans and plastic, fly-tipped contents of kitchen flip top bins, and all the usual stuff that should be taken to the dump - mattresses, fridges and unwanted furniture left in the field entrances. A mile and a half stretch in particular really got to me yesterday - you could hardly see the grass. I just don't want to ride through such crap. Maybe it's the time of year, once the grass grows and the hedges are in leaf it will get covered over, but most of it doesn't break down or compost. It's really depressing. Why do some people f-ck up their surroundings? Why is it apparently increasing?

Next weekend is "clean for the queen" day where you litter pick in your local area to commemorate Lizzie still being here, or some such reason.
You could join in.
I would if it was just called litter pick locally or something. I'll choose a different day.

Yes - know about that. Thing is - on this particular stretch I reckon you'd fill a skip every few yards, the volume is unbelievable.

I concur.
It's horrible. The powers that be needs to start pushing the message that it's antisocial and unacceptable, maybe start fining a few people.

I've driven through places like France, Germany, Slovenia etc... and realised that this country is a litter strewn hole.

trouble is the powers that be Wont let people with vans take rubbish to the householders waste stations..
you have to use waste management companies..even tho this would stop a huge amount of this behavior.
legal tax paying businesses dont mind paying as its part of the contract..

But the unregistered cash in hand no waste transfer licence dodgy types all tip in the lanes at night where ever possible and couldn't give a toss as they saved several hundred pounds by simply popping out for 10 mins, they win all ways.
you also get the crap shitty scuzzy society types that simply dont care Even tho its FREE to tip rubbish with a car or trailer or a phone call to the council ...some have a small charge but its a very small charge.

i hate seeing fly tipped rubbish , it wont stop while Councils have stupid idiots making stupid decisions, they prefer to spend millions on clean ups rather than controlling the waste dumped by having a "bring it here free" or a small charge policy.
we used to have this in Peterborough and it worked well. since it was stopped to save money we have far more fly tipping :banghead:

It's not just fly tipping that spoils the grass verges and hedgerows. A lot of rubbish is thrown out of cars especially when they're stopped around junctions. Drivers leave rubbish in lay-bys when there is no bin or it's full. What's so hard about taking your rubbish home with you?

There is more fly tipping, but what is so shocking is the amount of smaller stuff, fast food wrapping, paper cups, drinks cans, plastic bottles - and what seemed to be a new development, the contents of kitchen flip top bins, smallish plastic bags and bin liners full of everyday waste, just thrown in the ditch rather than put in the home collection bin - that must be an easier option than putting it in your car and driving out of town to lob it in the hedge? There was so much of it that people must be making a special trip to deposit it - presumably stopping on the way at KFC or the chippy on the way so as to make a night of it - crapping on the countryside must be hungry thirsty work

And what gets me is how much stuff you see fly-tipped when there is a free recycling centre just up the road

Fly tipping of larger items has been getting worse and the authorities have been making it more difficult to access tips - need to register your car, restriction on the number of visits etc, but some charities will collect unwanted appliances and furniture. What is really depressing is the volume and continuous nature of it, for a good mile and a half through green countryside on the edge of town every square foot of the roadside disfigured by rubbish and not really getting any less as you rode further out in the lanes either.

I know. It's all an eyesore.

Barnet,
Around this way there are several lanes blocked by fly tipping. Not even on the side of the lane, but in the middle, completely blocking it.

I have been for one ride downriver from Leeds since the floods a couple of months ago.

The riverside trees and shrubs covered with plastic bags, packaging, food wrappers etc etc etc. Not just a few bits and pieces - but completely shrouded in the stuff, to a height of 8-10 feet. For mile after mile after mile.

Disgusting.

Tbf that is one huge clear up operation needed. It'd take many men, many months.

I live in Bradford on the Leeds border, Bradford council introduced residence permits, this was to stop Leeds citizens using Bradford's tips. I use the Leeds tip as it is nearer (doh)..................................only an idiot could not anticipate the result, a surge in fly tipping locally.

When were the permits introduced? I live on the other side, and have never been asked for a permit.
