Four of us are planning to travel to London in August for two days. Checked prices just now but as I can't booked more than 4 months in advance, I put in May 2 and back May 3rd from Barnstaple to Victoria. Guess how much...............? £110 each!!!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous !!! What a joke public transport is in this country. So we are very much considering going by car now, it will only cost £50 tops on fuel plus parking of course.

Get two '2 Together Railcards'. You'll save 1/3 of that.

I found tickets on those dates for £47.50 on The Trainline...

I get it to be £230 all in for the four of you including the cost of rail cards.

Is a coach an option? They are usually much cheaper. They also leave from Victoria. National Express.

Edit: Just had a look on NE website.
London to Barnstable. £5.00. Though it does take 5.5-6hours

I can get tickets for £41.50 Barnstable to Paddington return (for those dates on Tramline). Sounds a bargain to me

Yeah, well, you can prove anything with facts.

We keep trying to go for a weekend in London but always end up somewhere cheaper, Madrid, Valencia, Catania, Seville etc................ any time I've had to go for work, I've driven, I don't even bother looking at train costs, too high, too complicated.

How can it cost me about £4.50 return to Leeds (10 miles away) and about a million quid to York (30 miles away)?

The Leeds Bradford service is heavily subsidised by West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive aka Metro.

It's a bus, not a coach. Unless you are suggesting someone to encourage him.
