Right of way of sillies

Have seen it on the roads and on uploaded videos. We cyclists assume and know our right of way but asuume the rest do as well. Cyling within one car door length instead of one and half, powering on when oncoming motorists ahead is turning from mainroad to side road and not watching the traffic on the left in a roundabout.

Right of way does not make much sense when you are in the hospital, Why then do we continue to do it.

Do we all continue to do it?
We all have to be assertive on the roads to a certain extent regardless of mode of transport or we would be giving way to every other road user. It's getting the right balance of assertiveness and caution whilst making good progress that can be the tricky bit:smile:.,

Very simple really

The whole interaction between any two road users is based on Trust.

When you are driving / cycling along a road and there is a junction, you simply assume that the driver on the other side will recognise your priority and act accordingly

As you approach a junction , you assume that the other road user will again recognise your priority and let you pass before pulling out

It is the way it works

You are assertive when you take primary in a narrow lane, you are assertive when you filter out with a quick backward place to go past a bus slowing down for a stop in flowing traffic, amongst many other other moves to take our rightful place on the road.

Surely riding within car door length cannot be considered as assertive.

On Alexandra Road and others in LBWF the cycle lane is slap bang in the door zone, ride outside it and you get beeped and punishment passed, that's intimidating for nervous riders.

At first glance it could be said to be silly, but as glenn forger says it's a position that can be forced upon you by poor road design, so that's where the caution comes in.
At times when you are forced into a potentially dangerous situation you must exercise greater caution, slowing down, increasing vigilance, poised to take avoiding action, etc..

Right of way does indeed make no sense, which is probably why it doesn't exist. There is only 'priority', which is a courtesy you give, not take.

Being alive is much nicer than being righteous but dead.

It can depend a bit on your knowledge of the road and your speed, very slow and I'm fine with being in what I would call the door zone (though still a reasonable distance), but certain places such as outside schools, and shops there is no way I'm going in that area. I've heard that click so many times and I'll still make a point of a glare and Oi at the driver as I react (even if I'm nowhere near the door just because they didn't look before opening it).

I'm not undermining your answer to the OP, but...

The only Trust involved is trusting that they are going to try to kill me.

Continue to do what exactly?

Right of way doesn't exist so it can't be that?

Ride within the door zone - likely to be knocked off.

Ride out of the door zone - less likely to be knocked off but we might upset someone?

This thread makes no sense.
