Is the cycle lane a painted on one that is on the road, or is it one of those that are shared use with peds on a pavement (i.e. separate from the road).

The former.

+1 - Behave like a car - if the car in front of you is turning left when you are driving you slow down and let them go.

If you are in front of the car and you are turning left you have right of way - which you assert by using the uber-duber primary position.

False comparison. You might well let them go but it's not a reasonable comparison.

oh and btw.... never EVER use the cycle lane. Cycle lanes are generally the on road equivalent of the hopper on top of the sausage machine, they placidly take to somewhere where you will get chewed up and spat out. Make like a buffalo girl and go around the outside, around the outside and then assert yourself to merge with the queue and turn left or go straight on.

Well if you are on the road, then they have no right to left hook.

I've managed once or twice to stop this by screaming at the driver - usually because I've been at a fair lick, they charge past, signal, and give you no-where to go.

I've been properly left hooked by a driver, despite me shouting, being at bonnet level...I ended up slamming on as they weren't stopping !

I had this happen to me yesterday on a rural road. I had eyeballed the car approaching from behind. They moved out to give me room. Fine but then the car cut straight across me. I was going quick so left skid marks to try to avoid becoming roadkill and some choice words. How it missed me I don't know. More down to my bike handling survival skills than the driver's dangerous driving. Turned and went back to the road but car had vanished.

GG don't your local authority put a cycle lane in when the potholes are too bad for the cars thus moving them onto fresher tarmac to chew up?

The OP wants to go straight on;)

As for cycle lanes, if they happen to be on the bit of road that I feel comfortable with, that's fine with me and I'm happy to ride in them (if they are not, I don't use them). What you shouldn't do is let a cycle lane dictate your road position as it is fixed entity and traffic conditions are dynamic.

which is what I meant to say! (the wonders of the edit facility means of course it is what I said... So there;))

Normally, I'd agree, but this particular one is strangely well thought out (mostly) and quite useful... Going round the outside isn't an option though, the road is quite narrow (especially with the cycle lane taking up some space) and there are many double decker busses both sides.

Fossy, this particular one is the intersection of Wilmslow Road with Wilbraham Road in Fallowfield.... Just after Sainsbury's if heading north.

Oh..I know this one..... OMG you ride through here.....

I don't.........;) really..........

Hit the back roads and go down past the Armitage Centre then do the A34 in...... lots less carnage.... PM me if not sure............

Take it from a very experienced rider...... I regularly come into Mcr from the south, and avoid Fallowfield... and the Student run in.....I've seen the mess sat in a bus.............. Parrs Wood Road, back of Sainsbury's - turn right , A34, and in...... even riding on the white line to pass cars is better than that route......

I'm glad you're survived. I've found eyeballing some twerps tells them that I've saw them and its OK for them to do their stupid manouvre; you can't win sometimes ;)

To be honest, approaching a junction like that you should always try to move to the right. Too many cars view a cycle lane as an extension of their junction - allowing them to enter the main carriageway in order to look to their right. It is a common point of conflict (and one that I believe is mentioned in the book "Cyclecraft", not that I claim to have read it.....).
