No it doesn't ya plank!

You obviously don't understand retail and what they do and you my friend are exacltly the type of mug they are aiming at.
Why the abuse, Greedo? To me the final price is £4, but the original wording is intentionally ambiguous - that is why Borders use it.

It does come across as aggressive - plank and mug in quick succession. It might not be how you meant it but that's how it comes across.

As for getting involved - it's a public forum innit.

Well it wasn't meant like that. My god people can be very touchy at times. I genuinely never set out to cause any harm to anyone.

Technically the further 20% should refer to the price that it THEN is, i.e. £5, so it should be £4, but I wouldn't expect staff who work in a book shop to know this, so I would expect it to be £3.

Well perhaps you need to reign yourself in a bit then.
I don't think Greedo is next in line for the throne. And even if he is in there, somewhere down the list, I don't really see Liz, Charlie, Wills and all the others ahead of him, popping their clogs all at once...

"Its Christmas, Balmoral, the whole royal family are there, Edward pulls a cracker, there's a bomb in it there, all wiped out.
..
no, no wiped out, just bare with this ok. The outer royals, the Armstrong's, Jones, and that photographer bloke, they all, they are all going to the funeral, in a big mini-bus, a sniper takes out the driver, it goes over a cliff
...
stay with it, stay with it, just bare with me, now, your husband is shooting grouse, a messenger brings him news of this tragic second event, in his excitement, he realizes he's going to be king, suddenly he loses his footing, and with his shot-gun, and this may be stressful, he blows his own head clean off"

people I spoke to yesterday.

Borders is closing as you know and have various % off on books etc...

In one section they have books at 50% off. yesterday they had a sub sign saying "This weekend only a further 20% off our 50% off books"

Now the conversations I heard in store and got involved in was amazing. Amazing how thick some people are!!

So my question to you is. If a books original price was £10 what will you get it for today and how much discount are you getting % wise???

Nobody should require algebra just to buy a book.

Why Borders are marketing it like this is pretty obvious, but it just once again goes to show that they were at best a long runner to a cheap contender. For a building that consumed so much yet offered so little, one could say it was the [insert lamentable country / person] of the book industry.

These cheap gimmicks flourish in gimmicky stores, it is a shame that the disinterested staff will lose their jobs, but I'll be glad when that annexation to the the Richard and Judy club are gone, and the sooner Waterstones follows suite, the better.

I was in Borders, Buchanan Street on Saturday and I asked two or three staff members what that actually cost of the items would be after the discount? None of them could tell me! I gave up and left them. Big queues of people though who had no idea what they were about to pay for their stuff.

The further discount still refers to the original price. £3.

Do you not think they would put 70% off instead of what they have with the 20% off the 50% as it's a sly way of getting thick people to be duped into thinking it's 70% instead of 60%
incorrect. The word 'further' makes it clear that this is a discount beyond that already given.

Not as thick as the lady in Morrison's who when confronted with 4-packs of lager at 50% off, said, "Nah, I'll wait until they're "Buy One Get One Free"..."
