Get a Kona P2. My original (non-disc) P2 is still good on my Cinder Cone after almost 20 years. Loads of surface rust, but solid as anything. Dread to think how many miles it's done!

Seem to recall a straight fork being quite radical when I bought the Cinder Cone!

Looks good. Have you ever seen one?
Nope. I'm in the same boat as you - looking for bits to convert an old MTB on the cheap(ish) - and had it bookmarked.
I'd prefer a curved steel fork to the straight kona. So am still looking for something suitable.
