I've just built a new rear wheel using a Rigida Chrina rim.

The rim joint is quite bad on this rim. The brake surface is smooth because they are machined after the join is done, but looking down on the wheel when in the jig it's impossible to remove a 'kink' at the joint when the wheel rotates. Most rims have this problem a tiny bit but it's usually un-noticable.

My question is: will I notice this 'lump' when cycling? Probably not right? It's about a 1mm ridge at the join. I have tensioned 1 spoke more than I would like to minimise it so I'm not going to crank-up the tension anymore to bring it down further!

If its 1mm radially you won't notice it riding.

A whole mm? Was it visible before you assembled it? I'd have been tempted to take it back.

The other option is to carefully file the step off.
If it's an expensive rim I agree, if it's a cheap rim I'd live with it. I fettled a friends sons 2 bmx's t'other day, they had a similar step on all 4 rims, I could'nt feel it, but they have huge tyres on.

This is not uncommon with some rims. I usually use a fine sharpening-stone to rub it down.

thanks for all the replies.

to answer a few:

1. it's not a sideways jump so braking will be fine.

2. the best way to solve it would be to sand/file it but I'm not keen!

3. the rim is a rigida chrina 700C worth £16 so it's fairly cheap

4. I did notice before building but I thought I could 'true' it out more than I actually could in the end - and it was bought online so not easy to return. (it is perhaps a bit less than 1mm)

5. I agree that with the tyre mounted it does smooth it out

I will be riding 100 miles on Monday next week using it so will see then (also running it in on Saturday for the first time)

I started using Rigida rims for 2 reasons:

1. I had a few bad experiences with Mavic and their prices seem to increase by the week. First production went to Romania and then Taiwan - the quality has definitely gone down IMO.

2. I bought some rigida Sputnik rims a while back and was very impressed by the quality and price.

This is the second 'dodgy' chrina I've had. I'm now having second thoughts about Rigida rims and might return to Mavic next time. The likes so DT Swiss etc. are generally too expensive.
