Back in the dim and distant past I always used Velox cloth rim tape, but for a long time now I have been using plastic rim tape, after a few punctures with nothing in the tyre or pinch flat evidence, I came to the conclusion the rim tape (which was a little of center) must be to blame, I have replaced it on a couple of wheels with this,

This is the tightest fit tape I have ever used and seems durable (time will tell) I have also use Specialized tape, which seems very good.

Have you had trouble with rim tape?
So do you have a preferred tape?
Do you use insulation tape? (I have heard of people just using this)
I have some spare Stans tubeless tape which I was going to try but it was too wide for the rims.

Don't use insulation tape or vinyl tape on a rim-braked bike. Photobucket is down so I can't show you a photo of what happens to it when the rim gets really hot on a long descent; the tape softens and herniates into the spoke holes then bursts somewhere and the inner tube bursts through the hole. Use decent cloth reinforced tape.

Edit: Photobucket is down but my pic has found its way onto Google Images. You can see it here, five rows down, it's the white tape on a wood background:

Just found your old thread, very interesting and not something you want descending a steep hill, I wonder if all plastic tape is created equal (temperature tolerance wise) or if some is better than others.
