I wonder if found guilty, will the punishment will fit the crime or the level of 'outrage' it caused.

I say they should both be chopped at the ankles with a chainsaw... see how they like it.

Either that, or get them to research and answer the eternal question: How much wood would a Woodchuck chuck if a Woodchuck could chuck wood?

There's two issues here; first is the tree and there's also the damage to an ancient monument.

It's just been the opening statement from the prosecution, often designed to 'persuade' a defendant to change their plea. There's still the prosecution, the defence and closing arguments.

Let's see what happens and I hope it's a fair decision as they will probably appeal based on media prejudice.
