Oh dear. News direct via CycleChat. What a nice natured guy he always seemed to be when broadcasting. A very young, canny wit - and obviously a decently knowledgeable gardener too.

I'd not heard of him before now but it sounds like he'll be missed by quite a few people.

He was incredibly knowledgeable about matters gardening, but he wasn't so far up himself and his knowledge that he couldn't have a laugh at hgis own expense and the expense of other GQT panellists if he thought they were being a bit serious.. thinking of his retorts to Bob Flowerdew on occasion!

I liked his view that gardens shouldn't be all neat and tidy, he didn't think they were proper gardens. He was a real character and very sharp.

Sad of course, but I never liked him. I thought he never missed an opportunity to get a laugh at someone else's expense and to make questioners feel small. Of course he's being sanctified now and that nasty, wee-minded sense of "humour" is being redefined as some sort of towering intellect.

He'd do alright on here then IMO - "get a life" - to use the avuncular - 20 inch. Happy New Year.

Thanks, I have one. Don't you mean "vernacular"?

Nope, he was using a form of wit to criticise you gently.

An unnecessary post from you in my opinion too, FWIW.
