I feel bloody terrible. I killed a cat.

Driving back at 3 am I saw a cat on the opposite side of the road on the pavement, it's eyes caught my lights as I turned the bend, in a split second it runs across the road right at me, no time to swerve even, and the next thing I hear is a clonk and a crack from my front wheel arch ...i slowed down and saw it dead in the road in my wing mirror.

I tell myself it wasnt my fault, but actually it is....bloody car driver...

My Mum once turned a corner in a country lane, to be faced with a line of duck and ducklings in her headlights. She was sure she ran over the last duckling, and very upset about it.

That was just before my sister's 6 or 7th birthday, and that year it seemed that every card her friends gave her featured a picture of a duckling - it just happened to be the latest 'fashion' in the class...

I was once riding my motorbike at, er, brisk speeds over the A686 Penrith to Hexham road very early one summer morning. I came over a brow and there, crosing the road in front of me were five pale brown animals in a row, weasels I guess, in a line of adult - baby - baby - baby - adult, like this: -- - - - -- crossing the road. I had no chance of avoiding them so I steered the bike as best I could to get the tyres in the gap between two... was going so fast I had no idea what happened but I did get a glimpse in a mirror of the same formation, unchanged behind me. I still feel bad about that and hope I didn't squash one of the babies.

Perhaps I redeemed myself when, many years later, I spotted a tiny black and white kitten cowering in shock in the middle of a very fast dual-carriageway as cars blasted past each side of it. I screeched to a stop and sprinted back, dashed out into the road and saved this tiny kitten, which promptly bit me. It had a bloody nose so I think it must have fallen off the undeneath of a farm vehicle. Took it to the nearby farm but nobody was in so I took it to another where the wifey took it from me and agreed to look after it. I wish I'd taken it home to my little boy now; he'd have been thrilled.
