That's a joke. The essence(!) of motoring is that everything should get out of your way. Unless it is bigger than you.

They built a new road once, near where I lived, through virgin countryside. The road-kill was phenomenal. On more recent new roads (not in the UK, obviously) I notice that in similar circumstances the road is fenced off.

I am convinced that it is the act of getting inside the vehicle and isolating yourself from the world that gives rise to a greater or lesser degree of detachment and dehumanises people.

Kind of analogous to the way one suspects many growly bears on t'internet wouldn't say boo to a real life goose if they happened to bump into one.

Similar experience to OP.

Doing just under the 50 limit on a straight road with ample visibility. Cat shot under a field gate from my left. Fraction of second for options and I decided safest choice was to go over it.

If it'd been a person, and only a child would have had the agility etc, I might have missed it by doing a danger dive across the road or going left and ripping the nearside off my car on the drystone boundary wall, risking my sleeping son's life in process.

No contest.
