I've just had the same problem with British Airways, I booked a return ticket from Shanghai to Heathrow and asked for an aisle seat each way, they said no problem so long as I pay an extra £40 each way. This is the first and last time I will use them as for the last 25 years I've only flown Cathay Pacific and with them you can always choose your seat at the time of the booking at no extra cost.
And what if someone else has already booked it? Personally I think the more they charge for the extras the less they charge the rest of us who are prepared to sit anywhere inside the plane. Why pay extra for the aisle seat anyway.....must be worth extra otherwise you wouldn't have wanted it.

The best scenario is nobody bothers to reserve seats, then you usually get to sit together. I never give the greedy busterds anything that is a rip off.

That's a bloody rip off.

I suggest you train as a pilot, so you're guaranteed the best seat every time.

Their seats are terrible; no window blinds, screens that won't play movies, headsets that can't access music, and unless you fly an Airbus, not even a table for you to eat your meal from.

In fact they' re so terrible , they have to pay people to sit there!

Cathay Pacific every time.

Cathay Pacific every time.
It's a bit of a detour if you're wanting to fly to Spain though. Probably adds substantially to the cost too!

When the kids were young I never paid the seat reservation fees and always hoped that they'd be sat with other people, a long way from me.

I love cheap airlines, the pricing structure is all a game, it's up to you how you play it, I'll often use two different airlines on the same holiday to minimise costs.

The biggest scam by far is the requirement to check in THREE HOURS before departure. This gives you plenty of time for your retail opportunities and since you are certain to feel hungry or thirsty during those three hours, ensures you will buy food and drink at the airport's disgustingly exploitative price as well. We take sandwiches and just buy a coffee.

I feel like rockafella, I would gladly pay £39 to make sure my wife and kids were at the front of the plane and me at the back..

I'm just taking down notes in case I ever have kids, anymore tricks of the trade?

I used to be able to get the emergency exit seats every flight. Just turn up and say "Can you imagine the legal bill if I squash these legs into what you call a seat for 4 hours?" and then suddenly the airlines figured they could charge for this. I still got away with it for a couple of years but not any more.

In 2013 for various personal reasons my holiday was delayed until August. My usual flights to Crete went up from around £100 each to over £500. Why can't the people with kids "see the UK before they go abroad" (that's what my mum and dad did to me)
