I saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1976 in a cinema in Shepherds Bush. You could pick up a badge "I survived The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in the foyer, on the way home. It's the only horror/slasher film that I've seen but it was very cleverly made. There was actually very little gore and guts, but a lot of room for your imagination to fill in some quite horrendous details. Brilliant, if you like that stuff.

Agreed @slowmotion. I think the physicality and use of sound in the film also plays a huge part in its effectiveness. That door slam always sends a shiver down the spine, then the imagination kicks in. Amazingly disturbing.

I see that the new Leatherface origin film is going to be released on streaming TV before getting a limited cinema release. I know the way we watch films is changing, but to me that says the studio have no confidence they'll make any money and have once again made an absolute hash of things.
