I have just heard that Warren Mitchell has passed away.

We of course all remember Alf Garnet. Before the days of political correctness, when he got away with everything and all races could see the funny side.

He said he enjoyed his jewishness but was an aethiest. A good actor and funny man.

RIP Alf.

Sad news. Saw him on stage in Death of a Salesman - great performance. He was also always great value when he was interviewed at half-time during Spurs games. A fanatical supporter despite the views of his alter-ego!

Even to this day?

When I was a kid most of my friends thought it was celebrating racism and sexism. It took me a while to get over myself, but not this long!

He was hilarious once you'd realised

RIP

This world can never have enough comic actors.

Brilliant actor, in quite a lot of things. As well as Alf I fondly remember a one-off TV play where he was the foreman of a gang of removal men in a "seven deadly sins" type episodic story, each move representing a sin. Nigel Hawthorne and Leo Mckern (rumpole) were two of the movers.

Unlike most comic creations, Alf really had no redeeming features at all but a magnificent creation owing as much to Michel as to the writers. He did a great speech on smoking - which got more and more preposterous till finally he claimed he was "smoking for the Queen"
